Meet the Breeder; Interplant Roses

At the Harmelen location more than 150,000 crosses take place every year, resulting in new and interesting varieties. Both large-flowered and spray roses as well as garden roses are bred. The first tests of all new rose varieties take place in the Netherlands. A team of experienced people is working every day to develop new rose varieties. From the pollination process to harvesting, they select on colour and vase life, but also on whether the potential new rose variety fits into the existing - or future - commercial market segment.

After it has been decided that a new variety will be further expanded, it is necessary to apply for a licence for it. The provisional names of the new varieties are then changed into brand names, and the registration and the breeders' rights are established. The new varieties are promoted at flower shows, - presentations for both growers and end users, - social media, - and of course at the locations at home and abroad, as well as worldwide at all agents within the organisation.

Kenya

Interplant Roses also has an establishment in Kenya, near Lake Naivasha. Because of the abundance of flower farms there, and the suitable climate, it is a perfect testing ground. Visitors from all over the world come here to see and evaluate the latest - but also already existing - rose varieties.

The nursery in Kenya is sustainable and has a closed irrigation system. The water what is not used by the roses is pumped back into the system through filters and UV sterilisation. The waste water is cleaned in the established 'wetland', which gives it back to nature in an area rich of flora and fauna.

Many people do not know that developing a new rose variety takes decades for a rose breeder. Creating new rose varieties for the global rose industry is a real team effort. Understanding the market changes, the needs and desires of the rose growers, distributors and end users, requires that all those preferences eventually translate into finding the new rose variety. From this point of view, close contact with all the links in the process is required, and for this purpose they travel all over the world!!
