Meet the Grower; Bac Orchids
Bac Orchids has been cultivating large-flowered Cymbidium in various types and colours, since the early 1980s. But that is not where it all started.
Father Adri Bac started growing vegetables and Anthuriums. As the company grew and expanded over the years, the vegetables had to make place for the Cymbidiums.
Because Cymbidiums bloom in the winter period and Anthuriums in the summer period, was this a nice addition. The popularity of the Anthurium declined, which is why Dico and Gert-Jan Bac decided to specialise entirely in growing Cymbidiums. At present, the company covers 5.6 hectares and is located on the Herenweg in Moerkapelle.
The brothers are driven by the search for new strong varieties with fresh, bright colours. Bac Orchids therefore has a large and extensive assortment with more than 100 different unique species.
In 2016 they decided to start growing the Cymbidiums as sustainably as possible. This includes almost all residual heat for the greenhouse, obtained from the production of electricity for the village by the so-called CHP but also the 700 solar panels installed on the roofs of the sheds.
In the greenhouse itself, more and more use is being made of biological crop protection, in the form of some 30 different kinds of critters that can keep pests under control. From bees that take the nectar from the flowers, so that no more pests come and damage the flowers, to chickens that eat weeds.
