Meet the Grower; Roach Spray Roses
In 2006, Frank Voorn started his own rose nursery with the help of his parents, who had been growing roses since 1986. Until 2017, single-flowered roses were grown on 2.5 ha. To find a way to stand out in the market, also compared to imports from Africa, that year they started growing spray roses on a small scale. This was so successful that six varieties were added to the range in 2018. In this way, the company slowly switched from growing single-flowered roses to growing spray roses.
Harvesting is done daily, including Sundays. The full bundles are placed on a trolley in water in which they are cooled back to 2°C for at least 24 hours. When they come out of the cooling, the roses are manually sorted by length, thickness, and volume. Growing spray roses is year-round and the bushes produce continuous flowers over a period of eight weeks. Because the crop planning takes this into account, production is constant. This enables Roach to meet the high demand year-round.
Frank Voorn is constantly looking for new cultivars. So he selects the latest findings from various breeders to grow them up in small numbers at the nursery. He looks at how the variety grows and its vase life. But also whether it fits within the method of cultivation at the nursery. When the variety meets all expectations, it is propagated and scaled up to larger numbers and areas. Such a test phase takes about two years.
In addition to the 2.5 hectares where spray roses are grown on substrate, there is another 2.5 hectares where spray roses are grown in full soil. Spray roses are grown in the so-called Voorn Seasonal Greenhouse to supplement the supply from April to November.
Spray roses should be harvested a little more ripe. This may put consumers off a little, but if they are cut too raw, spray roses do not have the energy to fully open up. If you want to enjoy your roses in the vase for longer, cut at least 3 cm off the defoliated stem, place them in clean water and of course in a clean vase with some cut flower food.
Spray roses use a lot of water, so top up the vase regularly! This way, you are guaranteed a lot of pleasure from this beautiful product. For more information about Voorn Spray Roses click here.
