Meet the Grower: Lathyrus.com

Growing lathyrus has been a passion of the Hoogeveen family for many years. In 1992, Rob Hoogeveen started growing this fragrant flower in Ter Aar. In 1993, the business was continued in a rented greenhouse in Aalsmeer, before moving to its own greenhouse in the village of Nieuwveen in 1996. The nursery moved again to Roelofarendsveen in 2003. In a short time, the nursery changed locations, finally settling in 2018 at Mijnsherenweg in Kudelstaart, where 1.5 ha of lathyrus in various colours can be found. The nursery is still located in Nieuwveen. Breeding takes place here under our own management. Thanks to Lathyrus.nl many years of experience, we can respond optimally to the market in terms of colours, lengths and especially quality.

Cultivation starts with sowing the seed in the cultivation trays. After two weeks, the cuttings are planted out in the greenhouse. Lathyrus is grown in the greenhouse on rockwool slabs, which greatly reduces the risk of disease. When the plants are about ten weeks old, the first flowers appear and harvesting can already begin.

On average, the crop grows 20 cm per week, making maintenance essential. By nature, lathyrus is a climbing plant, which means that the crop must be guided upwards in the greenhouse. Horizontal wires are stretched between the stakes every 10 cm. The tendrils are then placed neatly behind the wires.

Immediately after harvesting lathyrus, the flowers are given a special treatment that significantly extends their shelf life. That lathyrus has the name of a one-day flower is certainly no longer the case. After treatment by Lathyrus.nl, there is a shelf life of up to seven days!

Lathyrus comes in different lengths and colours. As many as 23 colours are grown at Lathyrus.nl, as well as dyed in 10 different shades.

All in all, a lovely-smelling flower that is growing in popularity.
